With destruction of natural habitat since European colonisation of Australia - and as a consequence - food sources - birds have had to adapt to their new reality. Some do this better than others…. The Gang-gang cockatoo is one that now includes in their diet the introduced hawthorn tree. They migrate seasonally from forests to lower areas during winter – this in turn brings these beautiful birds into suburban backyards in search of food. Hence, I was able to observe them up close as they greedily consumed the berries of a hawthorn tree in a friend’s backyard. The sad fact is they are now listed as vulnerable which means there is a high risk of extinction.
